Today’s song: Garaj baras saawan ghir aayo (Thundering and showering the monsoon comes around)

6 February, 2017

This is a song from the 1990’s Pakistani sufi-rock band Junoon’s seventh studio album ‘Dewaar’(2003). Ali Azmat, the band’s lead vocalist sung, composed and co-authored the song with Pakistani poet and lyricist Sabir Zafar. Later the song was used in Puja Bhatt’s 2004 movie ‘Paap’. I always thought of this song as a very angry song, as I never listened to the lyrics carefully and focused over the movie scenes. This song indeed speaks of a fiery monsoon, mean and dreadful. But it is not about anger actually, it’s rather about pain and hopes to find solace together. And most importantly it is one of those mood songs- the songs we like to play in our head or headphones to indulge or change certain moods, has been very helpful so far.
